Exploring Big Data Using Visual Computing - 14 Jan 2014

The Marriot Hotel Cardiff provided the backdrop for an unusually lively RIVIC event in January prompted and supported by the Wales Government (*CRISP) and targeting business and academic collaboration for the forthcoming TSB call “Data exploration - creating new insight and value”.  Prof Nigel John, and Prof Ralph Martin had gained CRISP Wales Government sponsorship, to hold their ‘Exploring Big Data Using Visual Computing’ event to address the TSB call.

Registration saw attendees filling out short questions on their respective interests. This enabled groups of academics and companies, loosely matched against skills and company interests, to form around six main discussion tables and flesh out ideas to  firm up collaborative partnerships.

During the morning speakers, Myrddin Jones (Lead Technologist TSB) and Gareth Browning ECM2 set the scene and momentum for the discussions.  Academic speakers from the four RIVIC Universities,  Prof Ralph Martin, Prof Mark Jones, Dr Jonathan Roberts and Dr Yonghuai Liu,  provided a succinct description of their respective visual computing research in action across Wales.

The afternoon was considered to be the driving force for the event – the generation of ideas to establish collaborative partnerships to firm up projects to address the call.  Academics were encouraged to develop collaborative actions and reminded to submit their contributions using the Joint electronic-Submission system (Je-S).

The ‘buzz’ at the end of the afternoon was exceptional high – with a majority of attendees staying on for extended discussions. The impact of the event will be measured by the results of applications going forward. Your feedback will help to secure future development and funding opportunities so please consider sending few words about your experience and particularly if you would like to be more involved with RIVIC research and academics.

To date we have two solid projects in preparation for the TSB competition and others still being seriously considered. Thank you to everyone who attended and good luck with your applications.
