RIVIC Graduate School 2013
RIVIC Graduate School 2013
Over 50 RIVIC postgraduate students and staff members gathered in Bangor and Portmeirion in April for the fourth annual RIVIC Graduate School. Twenty seven presentations were made over the two days of the meeting highlighting our wide variety of visual computing research activities. Two keynote speakers also presented excellent talks on current and future research challenges in the field. Professor Min Chen from the Oxford e-Research Centre, Oxford University asked the question "What is Visualization Really for?" and argued that the purpose of visualization is more than just gaining insight. Professor Hans-Peter Seidel, the scientific director and chair of the computer graphics group at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Germany, talked about "3D Image Analysis and Synthesis - The World inside the Computer". He advocated that a new and more integrated scientific view of computer graphics is required to address the challenges of emerging technologies such as multimedia, social networks, digital television, digital photography and the rapid development of new sensing devices, telecommunication and telepresence, virtual reality, and the 3D-internet.
Excellent Spring weather and fantastic food and accommodation at Portmeirion complemented the quality of the talks and made this year's Graduate School an event that will be remembered by all.
