Registration of 3D Point Clouds and Meshes: A Survey from Rigid to Non-Rigid
3D surface registration is fundamental to many compute graphics, vision and medical applications. It transforms multiple 3D datasets into the same coordinate system so as to align overlapping components of these sets. These techniques evolve over the past 30 years from registering two surfaces under rigid transformation and to high-dimensional non-rigid deformation and more recently to isometric (low-dimensional) deformation. This project tries to understand these techniques from a data-fitting perspective, identify important future works and trends, and to develop new techniques based on the insights obtained from the analysis.
